Book/Website: Scholastic First Discovery Butterflies, Scholastic First Discovery The Human Body

Author: Gallimard Jeunesse and Sylvaine Peyrols

My opinion of this book: The Human Body book talks about the body and how is grows. It actually shows a child and the name of all the parts of the body. This book shows the child how and what is needed for their body to grow to by strong. The same with the butterfly book it shows the life of the butterfly. These two books are eduacitonal books for the classrooms.

EDRG 3321 Chapter 4

EDRG 3321 Chapter 4

I really enjoyed the activity we did in class on Thursday. Reading the story three different times from three different perspectives allows you to realize not everyone is going to have the same perspective. What I got out is not the same from the student next to me and that is what will happen in your classrooms. You will have different students who perceive different perspectives from the reading assignments that you give out.
We as teachers need to make sure that we give the children opportunities to deepen their knowledge threw literature. Have the children do activity before reading, during reading, and after reading to get their mind in motion. They also can have journals or graphic organizers to be able to reflect what they believe are going on in the story. Or write what they feel about and how they like or dislike the story. Have the student retell the story through a skit or a discussion. There are endless ways to get the student involves with reading and having them enjoy what they are reading. The teacher just needs to be aware of all her students and make sure that all of her students are engage and loving to read.

EDRG 3344 Memories

EDRG 3344 Memories

In class on Thursday, the class was talking about their past memories. Some that made you laugh, cry, and think about the ones you had forgotten yourself from the past. One of my memories that I talked about was cry. I have a daughter who is now eight years old and in great health. Praise God. When she was born she was born with fourteen birthmarks all over her body. They are called hemangiomas. The doctor at the time told us that they are not harmful to her and they would disappear as she got older. A few months had gone by and several of them did go away. One afternoon my daughter bumps her head on my coffee table and got this humorous bump on the left side of her forehead. I took her to the doctor and they said the bump will go down in a few days not to worry. A few days turned to weeks and then a few months. At this time we are seeing a Neurologist who now tells me it may be a tumor. My daughter is about 7 ½ months old now. They ran several tests. The hardest for me was her blood test because the hospital tied her down to take blood from her arms. Thank heavens for moms who will stand by you at any given time. The doctor at this time said the only way to make sure that it is not a cancerous tumor is to remove it and be tested. My husband and I decided to go ahead with the surgery and hope for the best. The day of the surgery I was awful mess. It was so hard for me to keep myself in order. By this time she is 8 months old and has never been away from me. Everyday I was with her feed her, bathed her, and held her at all times. As they gave her medicine to start to calm her it did not work. They ended up taking her out of my arms and just take her straight to the operating room. The terror in her cry killed me. I finally at this time broke down completely. I could not quit crying and wondering what was taking so long. The doctor had told us it would be a 15 minutes procedure and almost 1 ½ later he walks through the doors. That was the longest 1 minute walk he took from the doors to me it felt like an eternity. He had told us the surgery went fine and that they went ahead and took out the whole mass from her head. A sigh of relief that she out of the surgery and doing well. Going into the recovery room and holding her I till this day can remember the smell after the surgery. It was a burnt smell from the doctors cutting her from ear to ear and the iodine made me sick to smell it. I not sure if it was the smell of that or all the stress from that day but I suddenly got very sick to my stomached. We were finally aloud to take her home and got the results from the test and the mass ended up being one of those birthmarks called hemangiomas that were growing on to her skull. The doctor said it was a good thing that they removed it now to prevent further damages. This memory still to this day makes me cry. You don’t realize how precious life is till you come to a situation like this and it could be taken away at a blink of an eye. Today she only has 4 more of the hemangomas birthmarks left and they themselves are almost completely gone.

EDRG 3344 RAFT
I am doing this assignment over again because I am not sure if I did it correctly the last time so here I go again and maybe now I will be able to go to sleep.

(R) Purse
(A) Owner
(F) Letter (T) To properly use me

Oh how I love when you use me everyday. How I get to see the world and different places you go everyday. I get to go to the movies, dinner and shopping. I will never forget the time we went to Paris and saw such beautiful places. I even remember that you bought a new purse but continued to use me instead. But most of all you put valuable things in me everyday. I take great pleasure on watching out for your wallet and of course your make-up. Where would I be if you choose not to use me? However, I don’t want you to think that I am ungrateful for the use and all the special things I get to see when I am on your shoulder. I only have one request of you my gracious owner. Please, Please, Please clean me out. I am starting to feel suffocated in here. I need some space to be able to do breathe. I take pride on looking my best on the outside and would appreciate if you would help with the inside me. I do get tired of you throwing your gum wrappers, receipts and whatever you find possible to fit in me. If we can work together I will be a great purse on the outside and on the inside. I look forward to many more adventures with you. Thanks.

EDRG 3321 chapter 3

EDRG 3321 Chapter 3 Blog

Understanding What We Read

As I was reading chapter 3 of the text book, I was trying to remember my reading background and how it got started. I do not care to read unless I have to and going back I remember being forced to read certain things in school. I was only allowed certain kind of books which I thought were boring and useless to me. As I have grown up I have made sure that I don’t do that to my daughter. From day one with her in my tummy I read to her every night and continued that as she was a young child. Until, now when she reads to me every night. She loves to read which I am very grateful for that. I believe that has to do with giving her an option to pick and choose what she likes. Also, I would do some of the strategies that are in the book with her as well. For example, we would do the sketch-to-sketch activity. After, the child reads a certain book they then draw a picture of what they interpreted of that book. Another, strategy is the cosmic strips which I had never heard of and love. You take a piece of paper and fold it into four frames and draw four consecutive scenes from the book. This is a good comprehension technique to see if your students are comprehending what they are reading and its fun for them.

Why we read? Why not? It expands the child’s vocabulary and the understanding of so many things in life. You can have a book on manners, being respectful to others and so on and that child will learn from that book and be able to apply it to the child’s life.

EDRG 3344 Blog3 Writing Process

EDRG 3344 Blog #3

Writing is a process that contains a process of five stages.
Pre-writing – Brainstorming, graphic organizers, maps, webs
Drafting – rough draft, outline
Revising – any additions or deletions, look to elaborate the sentences, add adjectives, or adverbs
Editing – check for conventions errors, punctuation, spelling
Publishing – put it out there, make a book

Here is my story I did in class.

My Dream Vacation

My dream vacation became a reality when I was able to take my whole family to Florida to visit Walt Disney World at no cost to them. That included my husband, daughter, parents, siblings and their family. A grand total of 15 adults and children would go on this vacation. What a trip this would be?
First, we all boarded the plane; however trying to get 15 guests to sit next to each other was a challenge for all us. Of course, you have this person who wants to sit next to this person and vice versa. Once we were all seated it was time for take off. Four of us were scared out of our minds to be on a plane. Every noise or movement that we heard or felt we would take the skin off of our neighbor’s arms. It was a good thing we had our family there to help us get through it all. We finally landed and went off to the resort.
Before we could head off to the parks we needed to check into the resort. Who thought this would take forever separating the rooms. We went threw the whole process again of who wanted to sleep in her room or in his room. My mother at this time said you are sleeping here and you are sleeping there. When mom speaks you listen. We all put are things down in our rooms and got settle so we could go to the parks.
We visited the Universal Studios, Safari Park, Epcot Center, and Magic Kingdom throughout our stay in Florida. We saw so many characters, rode many rides, and saw lots of shows. We even had to buy a whole new suitcase just for souvenirs to make it back home. The most memorable studio was Magic Kingdom. We had gone to one of Cinderella’s shows and my father was chosen to come on stage with her and sing and dance with her. My father is not for one to get in front of people and do something like that. This was priceless, my dad turned beat red. Not only did he turn red in actually participated and did want Cinderella ask him to do. This made the whole trip worth it.
Afterwards, we went to dinner one last time in Magic Kingdom. We were able to have dinner with all the characters at the park. We enjoyed the time we were able to spend with each other. Later, that night we went back to the resort and pack and had to go to the airport and come back home. We will always have the memories from Walt Disney World as a family vacation.

EDRG 3321 Blog #2 Chapter 2

EDRG 3321 TH Blog #2

Chapter 2 Culturally Responsive Classrooms

In chapter 2 of the book it talks about culture and what is culture. The books definition of culture is “ways of knowing believing, valuing, and thinking among a group of people.” The book then goes into the different kinds of culture. For example, deep culture which refers to the ways people thinks of the world. During class today Mrs. Pickett was talking about one of her friends where the mother still took her daughter lunch everyday. The culture did not eat left over’s so the mother brought lunch for her daughter because it was fresh and that was part of their culture. We as teachers need to make sure we have a classroom with different kinds of materials that will help the students make sure they are comfortable in the classroom. Have different kinds of books from all kinds of cultures to have other students learn about someone else’s culture background besides their own. You can also have different events to help the students learn about the surface culture. Surface culture is what the wear, eat, and what holidays they celebrate. You could do an all about me poster to find out more about that child’s background to help you with them in the classroom. You might find out something that you would not normally find out about. Then use can use it to help you about the way you can help that child. Teachers need to have an open mind and wiliness to change and work with the students to make the classrooms ready for them to learn.

EDRG 3344 Pre/Dur/Post Stategies

Blog #2 EDRG 3344 TH

What are some examples of Pre/During/Post strategies? How do these strategies help students?

Some example of Pre/Dur/Post strategies are if a teacher is going to read a book, the teacher could ask her students what do you think this book is about. What is on the cover of this book and what do you think will happen in the book? So this strategy helps the students predict on what might happen in the book or what it is about. Another Pre strategy is trying to see what prior knowledge the student might have about the book and what the book is about. During strategy you can have small groups reading or the whole group reading together. During you can ask them questions threw out the book. For example, you could ask what does this word mean? Or do you know what might happen next children? This strategy keeps them on their toes and they are paying attention. The teacher is making it interesting to them and engaging them into the book. Post strategies are asking the children to draw a picture of what the book was about. Or have them write their favorite part of the book. You could have them go to the library and find a book that relates to the book the teacher just read. Also, have a book box for all parts of Pre/Dur/Post. In class was the first time I heard of a book box and loved that idea. You could put 6 things from the book in the box but have one that does not belong and see if the children are paying attention. You are also assessing what they learned as well by doing different strategies with them.

Strategies help children learn how to engage into activities. So many children are different from each other and when you use a mixture of different strategies all your children from all kinds of learning abilities will be able to interact. Just like when you use different ingredients to make a cake. You have several different ingredients to make this awesome cake. You wouldn’t leave out the eggs, or the flour then the rest of the cake would taste gross. You have to make sure you have all the ingredients and all the students engage to have a successful outcome.
