EDRG 3321 presentations

Today we had two presentations that were given in class. One was about 4 different stories in one genre. The four ladies that presented did an awesome job. The little doll with lamb was a great illustration and the children will love to see the puppet and little lamb. When Karen was talking about grace and in her story and then at the end of their presentation sang Amazing Grace I thought was very good. What a way to bring in morals and values in the classroom with out bringing up the subject that is so not aloud in school. I though this group did an excellent job.

EDRG 3344 Star Trek

This was a painful class day for me. I don't like Star Trek and vowed to never watched it. However, it was a good example for the class and what we were talking about. I choose the question Is Captain Dathon's sacrifice worth it? Why?
Yes, I think that the Captain's sacrifice was worth is. He was trying to communicate between the two and knew that this would make it possible for them to. He wanted to let the other ship crew know that they were not hostile and wanted to be able to communicate with other people beside themselves. In the beginning both ships did not know what each other was saying and when the captain from both of the ships were beamed down each of the captain's started to put things together. So yes it was a huge sacrifice but a well worth one.

My daughter loves to read this book called

Junie B., First Grader Cheater Pants

by Barbara Park

This book is about Junie who has all the answers when it comes to cheating. So she thinks. Some of the questions she asked herself, What about copying someone else homework, what is a friend shares an answer with you is that cheating? Great book for a first-grade read aloud. Kids would enjoy it as well as a moral lesson in it and they wouldn't even know it.

Another author is Ellen Miles, The Puppy Place Where every puppy finds a home Princess

The story is about a dog who is spoiled rotten and needs to find a home to do her previous owner can no longer keep her and is not sure he will find someone who will treat her like a princess like she is truly is.

EDRG 3321 Shared Reading

Shared reading is define as a collaborative learning activity. Some students find this activity to be fun and can't wait to do this in class. However, other who may have a learning disability might find this frustrating to them. A child who sits on the edge of their seat who might my ADHA would have a hard time focusing on the teacher. For me when we did the shared reading in class it was hard for me to focus. I am a visual learner and need to see what I am doing. I need to be able to see and read the book for myself so that I can put the words I am saying to the words I see on the paper. I can see where for me I did not enjoy this activity and so would other children. But since we have all kinds of learners we need to make sure the students are all engage and make it work so way.

EDRG 3321 Ch 9 Non fiction

I am relieved now I have finally caught with all my blogs and author profile. In class when Prof. Pickett was talking about how boys tend not to like to read and usually don't get involved with reading because it doesn't interest them. We as teachers need to make sure that we have different kinds on fiction and nonfiction along with other genre books so keep them engage. I remember when she said I believe a student she had and he like reading horror books like Steven King and no other teacher could relate to him but she did and that help the student to know that it is OK not read everything else others are reading. But you are reading and that will help you in your future to have more words and knowledge. Teachers need to be willing to go the distance and find what will help that student was to read and continue to read.

I pick the book Adventures of Riley Missio to Madagascar written by Amanda Lumry and Laura Hurwitz and illustated by Sarah McIntyre.

This book is about Riley going to Madagascar to find a rare lemur. On her way to finding the lemur she has many little adventures in finding trees called Baobab trees, and hissing cockroaches, mantella frogs. and many more. Once Riley gets back to school he tells of his adventures and how these animals are not found elsewhere in the world and how they are becoming so few. All the kids in the school are around him and all are trying to see his picture and be able to hear the stories. Nice book and colorful pictures.

EDRG 3321 Chpater 8 Fiction

We were able to write about the chapter or what we did in class so I pick what we did in class. This day Mrs. Pickett had us make a book about what fiction was to us. On the front of the page we put on their what we thought fiction was. Before this class if you would of ask me I would of just said something gloomy, dark and so on. Really didn't think of the fairy tales that are fiction. So the first side we had put words that our group thought fiction was like, fairy tales, mermaids, and so on. Then inside we drew a mermaid on water for a fiction picture. She was on a rock just sitting there. Although a life a mermaid would be nice and some would like to live that way we all know they are not real. In fiction books it gives the child the opportunity to use their imagination and picture somethings that they wouldn't normally do. This is why as teachers we need to be able to give different genres books in the classroom. So that all the children will have something that interests them and they will read.

The book I pick for this week is The Pout-Pout Fish
written by Deborah Diesen Pictures by Dan Hanna

I purchased this book from a book fair just because of the colors of the book and the sign said it was a great picture book. When reading this book I fell in love with it. It was about a fish who thought he was a pout-pout fish so he was always sad. His friends tried many times asking him why he was always gloomy. Until one of the fish just went up to him and kissed him. He suddenly change his attitude and then began to say he was a kiss kiss fish and was kissing all the fish and was a happy fish now. I can't wait to be able to read this to my class. Really fell in love with the book. Great pictures but also has a little lesson that anyone can change their attitude just sometimes they need a little something from a friend.

EDRG 3321 chapter 7 blog

Instead of doing the blog on chapter 7 I did the other assignment of looking up an old original fairytale. When I was researching online found a website with many of the old version of fairy tales. It is http://www.dbskeptic.com/2008/10/27/original-versions-of-classic-fairy-tales/. It listed several and what they were. The one I chose was The Original story of Sleeping Beauty. The story started off basically the same where Sleeping Beauty fall into a sleep for 100 years due to a evil fairy placing a curse on her when she prick her finger. The difference is the prince falls in lust with her and rapes her when she is sleeping and she becomes pregnant and then later gives birth to twins. While she is still sleeping the baby breast feeds themselves until one day the baby starting to suck on the mother's finger and then the baby sucks out the splinter and the spell in broken. Very much different from the one that is told this day and time. Quite interesting to me how in time how the story line and change so much.

The book I pick for this week was

Eats, Shoot's, and Leaves Why, Commas Really Do Make A Difference

written by Lynne Truss and Illustrated by Bonnie Timmons

This is a cute book that shows a young age group about commas usage. Throughout the book it has the same sentence one on one side of the page with comma's in the wrong place and then on the other side of the page with the correct usage so that the child who reads the books can see and read of it is in the book. Great way for kids to see. In the back of the book gives more examples of how to use commas and why you should use them in what usage. Really like this book and the kids will love it too.

EDRG 3321 blog chapter 6

In this chapter it talks about many different elements that are shown in the literature. From plot, too settings, characterization, style, and themes. There is a section in this chapter that talks about building a library for your classroom. This is important to have in your classroom so that the children can learn about different genres. Having beautiful illustrated picture books will be good for young children to have the opportunity to look at them. It stated in the book also to start a collection with a good anthologies stories the suit the age group you are working on. Have books from all different cultures so that are the children will have the chance to relate to the book if possible. If starting you library you will want to have appropriate books for young, middle school and high school students. Just depending on the age you have in your classroom. Books are a way for children to escape and see things that they would not normally see or read. Reading is important for all ages and children or students need to have the opportunity to choose the books they would like to read so that they are not forced to read something that they might not want to.
