Chapter 2 Culturally Responsive Classrooms

In chapter 2 of the book it talks about culture and what is culture. The books definition of culture is “ways of knowing believing, valuing, and thinking among a group of people.” The book then goes into the different kinds of culture. For example, deep culture which refers to the ways people thinks of the world. During class today Mrs. Pickett was talking about one of her friends where the mother still took her daughter lunch everyday. The culture did not eat left over’s so the mother brought lunch for her daughter because it was fresh and that was part of their culture. We as teachers need to make sure we have a classroom with different kinds of materials that will help the students make sure they are comfortable in the classroom. Have different kinds of books from all kinds of cultures to have other students learn about someone else’s culture background besides their own. You can also have different events to help the students learn about the surface culture. Surface culture is what the wear, eat, and what holidays they celebrate. You could do an all about me poster to find out more about that child’s background to help you with them in the classroom. You might find out something that you would not normally find out about. Then use can use it to help you about the way you can help that child. Teachers need to have an open mind and wiliness to change and work with the students to make the classrooms ready for them to learn.

  1. I really liked the idea of the ABOUT ME poster! I feel that this can really help teachers understand so much more about their students and I feel students will really get engaged in this project.GREAT JOB!!

  2. I agree that the "about me" poster is an awesome way for the kids to express themselves. Research shows that kids perfom better if they can relate to school. Well kids cannot relate if their own culture is so different and unaccepted. By talking about their culture and backgrounds, the kids can feel more comfortable with the school and setting and their peers. This will in turn hopefully lead them to a more successful school career.
